Nikolski, Alaska
Nikolski (''Chalukax̂'' in Aleut; russian: Никольский) is a census-designated place (CDP) on Umnak Island in Aleutians West Census Area, Alaska, United States. The population was 39 at the 2020 census, up from 18 in 2010. Nikolski is on Nikolski Bay, off the southwest end of the island. It is 116 air miles west of Unalaska, and 900 air miles from Anchorage. Residents are known as Unangan, and Aleut is spoken in most of the remaining homes. History The Aleutian Pribilof Islands Association reports that Nikolski is thought to be one of the oldest continuously-occupied communities in the world. Archaeological evidence from Ananiuliak Island, 5 km offshore in Nikolski Bay, dates human habitation to 8,500 years ago. A site known as Chaluka in Nikolski shows 4,000 years of virtually continuous occupation. Nikolske
Nikolske ( uk, Нiкольське) is an urban-type settlement in Donetsk Oblast, eastern Ukraine. It is located in the industrial region of the Donets Basin. It was the administrative seat of Nikolske Raion until 2020; the settlement now belongs to Mariupol Raion. Population: Its original name was ''Nikolske''. After the October Revolution, it was changed to ''Volodarske'' in 1923 after V. Volodarsky, a Bolshevik. On February 18, 2016, as part of decommunization laws, the settlement was returned to the founding name of ''Nikolske''. The town was captured by Russia and annexed into the Donetsk People's Republic during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, and the occupation authorities changed its name back to ''Volodarske'' on May 4, 2022. Nikolskoe Cemetery
Nikolskoe Cemetery (russian: Никольское кладбище) is a historic cemetery in the centre of Saint Petersburg. It is part of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra, and is one of four cemeteries in the complex. The third cemetery to be established in the monastery complex, the Nikolskoe Cemetery opened in 1863, and rapidly became a popular and exclusive burial site for the elite of Saint Petersburg society. It was carefully arranged and landscaped, with its cemetery church opening in 1871. Taking its name from this church, the Church of St. Nicholas, the cemetery functioned also a burial ground for the clergy and monks of the monastery. The wealthy and important of the city commissioned large and elaborate memorials during the later years of the nineteenth century and into the twentieth. Nikolski Air Station
Nikolski Air Station is an unattended airport located in Nikolski on Umnak Island in the Aleutians West Census Area of the U.S. state of Alaska. This former military airport is now owned by The Aleut Corporation. Scheduled commercial airline passenger service is subsidized by the Essential Air Service program. Current service to Nikolski is provided by Grant Aviation from Unalaska. As per Federal Aviation Administration records, the airport had 165 passenger boardings (enplanements) in calendar year 2008, 219 enplanements in 2009, and 160 in 2010. History The airport was built in 1958 to support Nikolski Air Force Station, a Cold War United States Air Force Distant Early Warning Line radar station on Umnak Island. Preobrazhenskoye Cemetery
Preobrazhenskoye Cemetery (russian: Преображенское кладбище, lit. Transfiguration Cemetery) is a cemetery in the eastern part of Moscow long associated with Old Believers. It was inaugurated by a Fedoseevtsy merchant in 1777 as a plague quarantine disguising the Bespopovtsy monastery. At that time the territory of the cemetery was located outside Moscow, but near its border. The cemetery soon became the spiritual and administrative center of all the Fedoseevtsy in Russia (just like the Rogozhskoe cemetery became an administrative and cultural centre for most Popovtsy Old Believers). The cloister consisted of two equal square areas, a monastery for men and a nunnery for women, separated by a road to the cemetery. Construction work was in progress throughout the 1790s and the first decade of the 19th century.
